We study real tests: the ones you upload and common exam formats. From the topics and question patterns that keep coming back, we estimate what's most likely to appear.

The Faster Approach: turn everything into one trig function, then factor.
Rule of one
Count the trig functions. More than one? Use an identity to swap until one is left, then solve like algebra.
Here: sin and cos is 2. Swap sin²x for 1 − cos²x and 1 is left.
There are two ways to solve this question.
Way 1The faster approachFaster and better
1. Swap sin²x for 1 − cos²x. 2cos²x − 3cos x − 2 = 0
2. Factor. (2cos x + 1)(cos x − 2) = 0
3. Solve. cos x = −1/2 (cos x = 2 is impossible)
4. Cosine is −1/2 in quadrants II and III. x = 120° or 240°
4 short steps. No checking needed.
Way 2The longer way
1. Isolate the cosine term. 2sin²x = −3cos x
2. Square both sides and use cos²x = 1 − sin²x. 4sin⁴x + 9sin²x − 9 = 0
3. Let u = sin²x and factor. (4u − 3)(u + 3) = 0, so u = 3/4 (u = −3 is impossible)
4. Take square roots. sin x = ±√3/2, so x = 60°, 120°, 240°, 300°
5. Check each in the original. 60° and 300° fail because cos x is positive there. x = 120° or 240°
5 steps, a power of 4, and squaring creates extra answers to throw out.
Why Way 1 is faster and better
- It stays a plain quadratic in one function. Way 2 climbs to a power of 4.
- No squaring, so no false answers and no checking at the end.
- It takes fewer steps, which saves time on a timed test.
How to decide before you start: look at the powers. Here sin is squared and cos appears once, so swap the squared one using sin²x + cos²x = 1. That leaves one function you can factor. Then list every angle in the allowed range and cross out impossible values, like cos x = 2.
